Eric Dier has told the Hampstead and Highgate Newspaper that he is delighted to prove his doubters wrong with his form for Tottenham Hotspur this season.
The 22-year-old was surprisingly handed a role in defensive midfield by Mauricio Pochettino at the start of the campaign.
Dier had spent his first season at White Hart Lane playing in defence, but since becoming Spurs’ midfield enforcer he has been a revelation.
The former Sporting Lisbon man has become a crucial component of Pochettino’s starting line, and he has already racked up 32 appearances in all competitions this season.
And Dier said: “I’ve been playing in a new position so I’m starting from scratch really. I think everyone was doubting it at the beginning but I wasn’t too bothered to be honest as long as the manager was happy with me, so I kept on playing and I think gradually I’ve been improving more and more in midfield.
“It’s given me a lot - it’s given me my England debut and a lot of games for Spurs - so I’m very happy, but I’m happy to be playing wherever the manager wants.”
Dier has partnered a range of players in defensive midfield this season, but his form has remained consistently excellent.
Despite his reputation rapidly growing, the youngster has never appeared overawed with any challenge that has been thrown at him.
Dier has played a key role in helping Spurs climb into fourth place in the Premier League table, and he looks likely to start against Norwich City later this evening.
