The Middlesbrough striker remains on the club's books.

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague has taken to Twitter to give an update on Middlesbrough striker Kike’s failed move away from the Riverside Stadium on transfer deadline day.

The 26-year-old had regularly been linked with a Boro exit earlier this week but when the clock struck 11:00pm he remained with the Championship club.

Now Balague has shed new light on a late offer that could have seen the Spaniard return to his homeland.

“Despite last minute negotiations, Kike did not leave Boro for Eibar due to a clause that forced a €1million payment to his old club Murcia,” Balague wrote on Tuesday morning.

Kike featured regularly for Middlesbrough last season, scoring 12 goals in 51 appearances including nine in the league. But this season he has fallen down the pecking order and has managed just four goals in 24 appearances to date.

He could still head out on loan when the emergency window opens next week, or alternatively he could have a role to play as Middlesbrough look to earn promotion back to the top flight.
