McGregor is 22 years of age and plays as a central midfielder, and Provan stated that the young Scot would not be pleased with Roberts’s move.
“But if Roberts’ arrival might interest the Celtic support, it won’t please everyone,” Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun. “Put it this way, don’t expect young Callum McGregor to be rolling out the welcome mat.
“Frozen out for the best part of a year, McGregor has worked his butt off to get back into the picture. What a boot in the b******s for him if he’s bombed again to accommodate a Manchester City player.”
One can understand Provan’s sentiments. After all, Roberts is a largely unproven - but talented - youngster and Celtic do have some very good young players on their books.
Roberts joined Celtic from City on an 18-month loan deal on transfer deadline day.
Celtic are at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 55 points from 23 matches.
Ronny Deila’s side are six points clear of second-placed Aberdeen and look set to win the league title yet again.
