Newcastle United are to give up on signing Saido Berahino this deadline day, report The Mail.
West Brom have so far stood firm regarding the 22-year-old, refusing to sell the striker.
Steve McClaren's side have overtaken Tottenham Hotspur as his most likely destination, but even they are getting the message.
"They had hoped to do a deal on the final day of the transfer window - Berahino indicated that he wanted to join - but now accept that the Baggies are unwilling to sell."
Berahino could yet become a summer target however, with the report claiming they plan to revisit their interest - on the condition they avoid relegation.
Signing the West Brom striker would have been a big boost in doing just that, but the addition of Seydou Doumbia will go some way to addressing their need for goals.
Berahino will have until the end of the season to step up and impress, in order to clinch his big summer move - although Newcastle may hope he does not do too well, as this would inflate his price tag even further, and attract more competition for his signature.
