Newcastle are pushing to sign Kieran Gibbs of Arsenal, the Daily Mail reports at 7:50am on their live transfer blog.
The Magpies have already missed out on two left-back targets this month, and Steve McClaren wants to bring in a new defender before the close of the transfer window this evening.
McClaren had to name a make-shift defence in Newcastle’s last Premier League outing, with a back-five taking on Watford. Attacking winger Rolando Aarons was named as a left wing-back, struggling in the role, and the head coach wants a new left-back brought in today.
And with time running out to seal a deal, the Magpies are turning their full attentions to Kieran Gibbs of Arsenal, who they believe could look to leave the Emirates.
Gibbs has fallen behind Nacho Monreal in Arsene Wenger’s pecking order, with the 26-year-old playing just 12 Premier League games this term.
He wants to be playing every week ahead of the European Championship to be guaranteed as a starter for England, and the Magpies can offer him a starting role at St James’ Park.
The Sun claimed last week that Newcastle were considering to move for Gibbs in the summer, but they have pushed up their interest and want to tie him down today.
