According to The Mirror, Liverpool full back Jose Enrique is in talks over a shock return to Newcastle United this afternoon.
The Magpies have been the Premier League's biggest spenders this month, as they have snapped up midfielders Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey from Bordeaux and Swansea City respectively, as well as landing Tottenham winger Andros Townsend and, earlier today, striker Seydou Doumbia from Roma.
Even after making four big signings to aid the fight against relegation, manager Steve McClaren may yet be in the market for another new face, with left back a major problem area at St. James' Park.
Now, a familiar face could be returning to Tyneside to solve those issues, as The Mirror report that Liverpool's Jose Enrique is in talks over a last-minute return to Newcastle before the transfer deadline.
Enrique, 30, signed for Newcastle from Villarreal way back in 2007, racking up 129 appearances for the club before leaving for Liverpool in 2011.
The Spaniard was a regular in his first two seasons at Anfield, but has played just 20 times in the last two-and-a-half years, and should be looking to leave Merseyside in order to play regular first-team football.
It's stated that Liverpool may be prepared to cancel Enrique's contract and allow him to re-join Newcastle on a short-term contract, with an option for an extended deal come the end of the season.
Enrique may be lacking in match practice, but he certainly impressed during his first spell at Newcastle, and a move back to the North East could be just what he needs as he bids to get his career back on track.
