Sam Allardyce will be hoping that the Frenchman can help the club as they battle to beat the drop from the Premier League.
The 29-year-old has been linked with Premier League leaders Leicester City as well as a return to former club, Newcastle United during this window (via Daily Mirror). And the Mirror reported that it was the Foxes that were closing in on a £10m move for the Frenchman.
However, the Mirror are now stating that the Black Cats have moved into pole position in the race for his signature, and if they could complete a deal before the deadline, it will certainly be a massive boost to the club's hopes of remaining in the division.
While Remy's record of just one league goal in 10 games this term is incredibly disappointing for a player of his calibre, it must be noted that he has started just once, with Diego Costa often holding down a starting spot.
His record for the Blues last season was much more impressive - where he scored 7 goals in 19 games - while his spell with the Magpies was also promising, and Sam Allardyce will be hoping that if they get a deal across the line, he can rediscover that form to help Sunderland claw back the four-point gap currently separating them from safety.
