According to a report in the Telegraph, Aston Villa have failed in a move for Roma striker Seydou Doumbia.
The Ivorian front man was Villa’s first choice transfer target, and Remi Garde has been desperately trying to force through a move.
However, Doumbia has rejected Villa’s attempts - and he is now set to join Newcastle United later today.
Villa had been determined to bring Doumbia in, as they felt he could enhance their attacking options.
Garde had even personal held numerous telephone conversations to try and persuade the striker that a move to Villa Park would suit him.
However, the 28-year-old has decided that Tyneside is his preferred destination, and he is likely to become Newcastle’s fifth addition of the January window later today.
It continues Villa’s struggles to sign players in the January window.
The Claret and Blues have been linked with a host of players, but they have not completed one signing yet.
