Speaking to Absolute Radio’s Rock ’N’ Roll Football show on Saturday evening, Ossie Ardiles has shared his original thoughts of Tottenham’s star midfielder Dele Alli - admitting that he never thought he would be good enough for Spurs.
Ardiles said: “I was thinking that this guy [Alli] was surely never, never going to play for Spurs. But all this time he is proving me wrong. He is just fantastic.”
Alli arrived at Spurs over the summer, linking up with Mauricio Pochettino’s squad having spent six months on loan at MK Dons after agreeing his transfer in January 2015.
He has not just established himself as a Spurs player, but he has become one of the most valuable players in their squad, and has become a shoe-in for selection at the European Championship this summer.
Alli’s rise has been phenomenal this past year, and it is no surprise that the 19-year-old has taken many people by surprise - including Ardiles.
The Spurs legend has admitted that he never believed Alli would be good enough to play for Tottenham, having seen him whilst still with MK Dons.
It is an embarrassing statement to admit right now, given how easily Alli has adapted to the Premier League, but Ardiles is surely one of a number who questioned Spurs bringing in a teenager from League One.
Alli’s rise has been a joy to watch, and it remains to be seen just how much better the young midfielder can get over the coming years.
