Marseille boss Michel says he was surprised to re-sign Florian Thauvin from Newcastle... and did not ask for him.
Marseille boss Michel has admitted he was surprised to see Florian Thauvin return from Newcastle just months after signing for them.
Thauvin clinched a loan deal back to the French side at the weekend, but will be back at Newcastle in the summer, with no clause to make the move permanent included.
Quoted by The Times, Michel explained that not only did he not envisage such a deal, but he did not even ask to re-sign Thauvin.
He said:“Thauvin? I did not ask, but good player is welcome.
“He is an interesting player, but I repeat, I did not ask. Thauvin has a very good level, I did not think he could come back after four months. I asked for a scorer. But the president did his job.”
Michel was appointed in the summer after Marcelo Bielsa left, so this is his first time getting to manage Thauvin, who will also play alongside fellow Newcastle loanee Remy Cabella.
His goalscorer could be arriving via another surprise source, with Steven Fletcher set to sign from Sunderland on loan for the rest of the campaign.
SkySports reported Fletcher is heading to Marseille to complete a move, after failing to win the favour of new boss Sam Allardyce.
