Christoph Metzelder believes Liverpool would be a 'super' destination for Schalke’s Joel Matip should the defender opt to leave the Bundesliga at the end of the current campaign, the Telegraph report.
The former Real Madrid defender cites Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as a key factor when commenting on Matip’s future, highlighting the German’s ability to get the best out of his players.
"Joel is free. If the interest is from England and he wants to have an experience abroad, then Liverpool is a super destination for him. Jurgen knows he can work very well with him," he explained.
"For Joel it would be an easier entry into a new country and a new environment."
Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for the Cameroon international over the past four weeks.
Sky Sports reported recently that an offer had been made for the player, though with progress seemingly slow ahead of Monday’s deadline, any deal for him is likely to be put on hold until the summer.
The 24-year-old is entering the final six months of his contract with Schalke and, with no new contact in sight, the Reds should have the opportunity to pick him up on a free in the summer.
Klopp will know of Matip’s capabilities as an opponent during his time as Borussia Dortmund manager and his top-level experience would be of great benefit when adapting to the Premier League.
Matip has been one of Schalke’s outstanding performers this season, making 22 Bundesliga appearances and averaging 3.3 interceptions and 4.8 effective clearances per league encounter.
