The 20-year-old centre-back joined the Blues from his hometown Red Bulls on Saturday on a four-and-a-half-year deal.
While plenty of Chelsea fans may not be too familiar with new boy Matt Miazga, the reaction from New York Red Bulls supporters to his departure should reassure them that the club have got their hands on a special talent.
The 20-year-old centre-back enjoyed a breakout 2015 campaign in MLS, as he not only established himself as a regular starter with his hometown Red Bulls but also proved instrumental in helping them win the 2015 Supporters’ Shield, making 26 regular season appearances and scoring once.
His impressive performances during his first full season as a starter prompted Jurgen Klinsmann to hand the 6ft 3in stopper his US national team debut in November’s opening World Cup qualifier against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, before he was later named the 2015 US Soccer Young Male Player of the Year last month over the likes of Arsenal midfielder Gedion Zelalem and Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.
The likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool were all reportedly keen to sign the one-time capped American this month after recognising his Premier League potential [h/t Daily Mail], but it was Chelsea in the end who managed to win the race to his £3.5 million signature.
The New Jersey native, who holds a Polish passport by way of his parents, now faces a big step up to the English top-flight and it remains to be seen how much first-team action he will see in the immediate future.
Some Chelsea fans are sceptical over whether he will go on to make the grade at Stamford Bridge – and understandably so given his lack of of experience at the top level, but the Red Bulls faithful certainly do not seem to share their doubts.
Here is how both sets of supporters reacted on Twitter to the move…

Any bookies offering odds of Matt Miazga playing less first team minutes than Papy Djilobodji did? #CFC— Marley Anderson (@91Marley) January 30, 2016
What is the need for Miazga if we have Christensen already #cfc— Leo Methley (@LeoMethley) January 30, 2016
Excited about Miazga. Still wondering if Kalas isn't a better option for the future tho. Should be on the first team this season. #CFC— Eric Freeman (@EricDFreeman) January 30, 2016
