Per Mertesacker says Arsenal’s team spirit is good this season

The Gunners are currently three points away from first placed Leicester City.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker says their team spirit is huge this season.

The Gunners have enjoyed a strong season so far, and with 15 games of the campaign left, they currently find themselves third in the table and just three points off first placed Leicester City.

Despite that, there has been every opportunity for team spirit to take a battering, with a series of injuries earlier in the campaign and a recent poor run of form threatening to derail their confidence.

Mertesacker though, says that isn’t the case and their team spirit this season is huge, adding that they are mentally stronger than ever before.

“We’ve kept the same squad and we have obviously made some great additions over the past two years,” he told

“In general, the team spirit has grown a lot. The team is much stronger and mentally stronger as well. There are a few steps to go, the season is always long and to get consistency is never easy.”

“There are challenges ahead of us but they make us even stronger, and I must say that the team spirit in the squad is huge at the minute.”

Arsenal will now be hoping they can put that team spirit to good use as they eye the title come the end of the season.

It will likely be getting a big boost in the coming weeks as well, with long-term absentees such as Francis Coquelin, Santi Cazorla and Alexis Sanchez all now working back to full fitness.

Their return will be a timely boost to both the squad and their morale, and Arsene Wenger will be hoping they can all play a significant part in the title race in the second half of the campaign.
