Remi Garde hopeful on striker deal, laments Aston Villa's failure to sign Lovre Kalinic

Rémi Garde

The Frenchman is yet to make his first signing as Villa manager as Monday's transfer deadline approaches.

Aston Villa manager Remi Garde has revealed to the Birmingham Mail that he hopes to sign a striker before the winter transfer window closes.

Garde is yet to make his first acquisition as Villa boss as Monday’s 11 pm deadline approaches but is desperate to bring in a proven finisher after seeing his side score just 11 goals in his 15 games in charge since replacing Tim Sherwood at the helm in November.

The former Lyon manager publicly expressed his interest in Chelsea’s Loic Remy late last month but the France international is now said to be on the verge of joining Premier League leaders Leicester in an £11.5 million deal [h/t beIN Sports].

Reports in Italy have since named out-of-favour Roma forward Seydou Doumbia as an alternative option [h/t Calcio Mercato], while N.E.C. Nijmegen attacker Christian Santos has also been linked with a move to the Midlands in recent weeks after netting 13 times in 20 Eredivisie appearances this season [h/t De Gelderlander].

Asked after Saturday’s dismal 4-0 FA Cup fourth round defeat to Manchester City whether he was expecting a new striker to arrive before the transfer deadline, Garde told the Birmingham Mail: "I would like to. I'm still expecting, I still have hope that I will sign one player, yes."

One player who will definitely not be arriving at Villa in the next couple of days, however, is Hajduk Split goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic.

Villa looked to be on the verge of signing the two-time capped Croatia international earlier this month after agreeing a reported £4.9 million fee with Hajduk but saw the move collapse at the final hurdle after his work permit application and subsequent appeal were both rejected.

They reportedly lodged a second appeal to the Football Association on Thursday but were met with another rejection [h/t Telegraph], leaving them with little time to find an alternative target at this stage of the transfer window.

On Kalinic, Garde added: "I've got nothing to explain. I just have to say that it's not a player we will sign, unfortunately."
