Charlton Athletic fans joke about Victor Valdes heading to The Valley on Twitter

The Manchester United goalie has just joined Standard Liege on loan.

This week saw Manchester United and Victor Valdes finally, temporarily at least, part ways. The former Barcelona goalkeeper had fallen foul of Louis van Gaal toward the end of last season after refusing to play for the under-21s.

The stopper, who joined United after a year out of football with a serious knee injury, was behind David De Gea in the pecking order at United but the club then brought in Argentine Sergio Romero as the Dutch gaffer decided Valdes was out of contention.

He headed to Standard Liege on loan until the end of the season this week - enter Charlton Athletic.

Charlton are owned by Belgian millionaire Roland Duchatelet. He owned Standard until July last year and his connections have seen some rather questionable players head from the Belgian club to Charlton in recent years. Dodgy French goalkeeper Yohann Thuram-Ulien perhaps the most unfortunate.

Charlton fans, who are currently in a running battle with their owner regarding his handling of club affairs, saw the funny side of Valdes heading to Standard and suggested that he was now one step closer to a move to Charlton.

Imagine that, a Spanish international with three Champions League medals becoming an Addick...
