Brad Friedel suggested on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (January 29) that his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate Andros Townsend will be a success at Newcastle United.
“Andros is an excellent player, he is an England player,” said Friedel.
“Newcastle are struggling,” added the former USA international goalkeeper. “I think he will go up there and give them a big spark of energy.
"He is one of those players who can carry the football box to box very very quickly… I think it is a very good signing for all concerned.”
Townsend joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Tottenham earlier this week. The England international winger was struggling for playing time at Spurs, and it was clear that head coach Mauricio Pochettino did not rate him.
The 24-year-old is a decent player and knows the Premier League inside out, and Newcastle will hope that he can provide them with the quality they need to get out of their current situation.
The Magpies are having a torrid campaign and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
Steve McClaren’s side are currently third from bottom in the Premier League table with 21 points form 23 matches, two points behind 17th-placed Norwich City.
