The Sun reported that top clubs have held secret talks about re-organising the competition to ensure only previous winners and high earners are granted automatic admission.
It is claimed Manchester United are among the sides backing the idea, which would be bad news for sides like Leicester City who are top of the table, while the Red Devils could continue to falter domestically in the knowledge they will be in next season's Champions League regardless.
Former Forest striker Stan Collymore quipped via Twitter that if qualification is part assessed on recent victories, then the Championship side should be eligible.
Looking forward to seeing #NFFC in the “ring fenced ” Champions League. After all, there are only 3 of the current last 16 who’ve won more— Stan Collymore (@StanCollymore) January 28, 2016
Forest won the old European Cup in back to back years in 1970 and 1980, a feat no English side has matched since.
The club still have two more wins than this season's current contenders Arsenal and Manchester City, and one more than Chelsea. Manchester United have won it three times.
