Report discloses Steve McClaren’s next move in transfer market

Newcastle United are hoping to sign a defender this month.

Steve McClaren is hoping to sign a defender in the coming days, the Shields Gazette reports.

With just four days to go in the transfer window, Newcastle have already been extremely busy this month.

Andros Townsend became the latest signing for the Magpies when confirmed as a Newcastle player earlier this week, following the arrivals of midfield receipts Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet earlier in the window.

However, another signing has been targeted, with McClaren keen to improve his defence as he looks to improve the Magpies in the Premier League.

McClaren’s team have been hit hard by injuries this season, and he couldn’t name a left-back in his team last weekend as the Tyneside club lost to Watford.

Rolando Aarons was used as a make-shift left wing-back in a 3-5-2 system, and McClaren wants to bring in another defender to provide further cover to his ranks.

It is not just injuries that are affecting Newcastle’s defence, with the poor form of Fabricio Coloccini also preventing any sort of consistency.

The central defensive positions have proven troublesome, and Newcastle could look to bring in a player who is versatile enough to feature at both centre-back and full-back.

There are no indications in the report as to who McClaren is looking at bringing to St James’ Park in the coming days.
