Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Liverpool, report The Times.
The Reds would only be able to sign him in the summer as he has already played for two clubs this season, but it is claimed Liverpool are determined to land the Mexican international once the season is over.
Hernandez was sold by United to Bayer Leverkusen, where he has really struck form, benefiting from being a regular starter, rather than a bit-part bench player as he was at Old Trafford.
He has scored 18 goals in 23 games for the Bundesliga side, and Leverkusen are not likely to want to let him leave cheaply.
The 27-year-old is proven in the Premier League, netting goals against Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle among many others - as well as scoring against Liverpool.
He netted 57 goals for the Red Devils in 159 games, after signing in the summer on 2010. At international level he has an impressive 42 goals in 78 matches for Mexico.
Liverpool are still searching for answers up front, with summer signing Christian Benteke failing to convince. Danny Ings has been injured for the season, but is seen more as a complimentary player than the future spearhead of their attack.
Daniel Sturridge remains an enigma, missing almost the entire campaign through injury, and moving for Hernandez would be further indication the club feel they can no longer rely on him.
Here is a look at how Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to news of his potential addition...
Even know Benteke has talent he doesn't suit our style of play I like him but we need someone else and Hernandez is that guy. #LFC— Jake Reynolds (@Reynolds99Jake) January 28, 2016
Ex-United or not, I'd 100% take Javier Hernandez at Liverpool. Great movement, top-class finisher and hitting his prime at 27. #LFC— Jack Lusby (@jacklusby_) January 28, 2016
I see Hernandez is rumoured to be a top target for #LFC... I'd rather get in a top defensive coach. Address our problem areas, dammit.— Daniel Mendes (@DannyboiLFC) January 29, 2016
