HITC Sport understands that West Brom are due to deliver final answer at the weekend
Newcastle have been in constant talks with The Baggies and a bid of £20million is sitting on Jeremy Peace's desk, whilst the North East club have also told him they will up that slightly if required.
However, Peace is clearly in no hurry to drop his asking price, understood to be closer to £30million - and like when he rejected Tottenham's advances last summer - he is in no hurry to accept Newcastle's bid.
Newcastle have long been clear that Berahino was their number one target and have been pushing to do the deal, which would take their spending close to the £50million mark this month alone.
But whilst Berahino is their top choice, they do have other options with loan deals for Loic Remy and Seydou Doumbia possible, whilst Swansea's Bafetimbi Gomis has been discussed.
One deal which should be completed over the weekend is a loan deal for Atletico Madrid full-back Guilherme Siqueira.
They had wanted to strike a deal for PSV Eindhoven's Jetro Willems - but that will now wait until the summer. Newcastle have also talked with Valencia about Lucas Orban.
