Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Brad Friedel gave his opinion on Saido Berahino on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Friday morning (January 29).
When asked if the West Bromwich Albion striker would be a good signing for Tottenham, Friedel said: “It’s really difficult to say. I don’t know Berahino as a person at all. I don’t know what he is like off field. I have seen what he is like on the field. He can be a very good player.
“As far as if he will be able to fit into the squad and the psyche of the team right now, I don’t really know because it’s just a player that I simply don’t know too well.”
According to Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Stoke City are all interested in signing Berahino in January.
The West Brom striker is a very talented young player, but he has struggled to play well this season. In fact, the 22-year-old is not even guaranteed a place in the Baggies’ starting lineup at the moment.
Friedel appears to rate Berahino as a player on the pitch, but at Tottenham to succeed under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, that will not be enough.
The youngster will not be guaranteed regularly playing time as Harry Kane is Spurs’ first-choice striker.
Will Berahino be happy to play second fiddle to the England international striker? Will the youngster see the long-term benefits of working with Pochettino?
