Gary Rowett has previously spoken about his desire to sign a new defender on loan before the end of the window.
West Ham prospect Reece Oxford has reportedly seen his loan move to Championship strugglers Charlton Athletic fall through due to the Addicks' manager Jose Riga, The Sun reports. Should the two clubs now be unable to resurrect the deal, then Birmingham City just have to swoop in for the 17-year-old.
Blues boss Gary Rowett has recently stated that after signing several attacking-minded players during this window, he is hoping to bring someone in on loan who can strengthen their defensive options (via Birmingham's official website).
And while Oxford's first-team experience is limited, what he has shown during his brief career would certainly suggest that he is the ideal option to bring in before Monday's deadline.
The England under-17 international made his Premier League debut on the opening day of this season. And while some youngsters may have been daunted by the prospect of playing against Arsenal at the Emirates, Oxford rose to the challenge incredibly.
Sitting in front of the back four, he was instrumental in keeping the Gunners at bay, which allowed the Hammers to come away with a stunning 2-0 victory. His ability to keep World Cup winner Mesut Ozil quiet was arguably the most impressive aspect of his performance.
What makes Oxford's performance against the Gunners all the more sensational was the fact that he was being used in a holding midfield role, rather than his arguably stronger position of centre-back. And that versatility is another aspect of his game that should put him on Rowett's radar.
The Birmingham boss told the club's official website that the side's last signing of the window would ideally be capable of featuring in several positions due to budget restrictions. And with Oxford proving that he can do that, it seems that he would be a brilliant addition that would be able to help the Blues stay in the Championship promotion picture over the coming months.
