Townsend joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week.
The 24-year-old England international winger has shared how McClaren showed him videos of his best moments at Tottenham in order to motivate him.
“I can play on either wing,” Townsend told The Chronicle. “The manager has basically shown me clips (in the video) of me out of possession, running back, helping the full-back, on both sides, me in possession, taking full-backs on, getting in crosses, shots, scoring goals.
“Basically filling me with huge confidence and knowing I have a manager up here who has huge faith in me and belief in my ability.”
McClaren seems to have a lot of faith in Townsend, and hopefully for the Newcastle fans, the winger will hit the ground running.
The Magpies are third from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.
Townsend knows the Premier League inside out, and his wing play will be important for Newcastle in the coming months.
The former Tottenham winger will have a point to prove at St. James’ Park, having struggled for playing time so far this season.
The 24-year-old could feature in just three Premier League appearances for Spurs this campaign, creating two chances in the process.
