Andros Townsend says David Ginola was his favourite player growing up

The winger was inspired by the Tottenham and Newcastle legend.

Newcastle United January signing Andros Townsend says David Ginola was his favourite player to watch growing up, according to the Shields Gazette.

Indeed, Ginola was a Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle icon and the 24-year-old would love it if he could emulate the Frenchman at St James' Park.

The winger recently completed a move from White Hart Lane to Tyneside and has spoken of the Ginola inspiration...

Townsend is quoted as saying by the Shields Gazette: "I’ve always said he was my favourite player to watch growing up, so no pressure there!

"I have confidence in my ability, and will hopefully go out and excite the St James’s Park crowd, take players on in the right areas - in the final third - and hopefully get a few assists for the strikers.

"I was too young to see him in the Newcastle team but watched the highlights of all the great games over the years for Newcastle and many games over the years."

If Townsend can contribute with just a few goals and assists between now and the end of the campaign, it could go a long way towards helping the Magpies stay in the Premier League this season.

But that's a tall order for the 24-year-old, who not only hasn't score or assisted much in recent months, he simply hasn't played much senior football at all.

Newcastle are without a game this weekend, having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Watford last round, while Spurs travel to Colchester United.
