Newcastle boss Steve McClaren hails old-fashioned winger Andros Townsend

Steve McClaren is excited about Andros Townsend.

Steve McClaren is excited about new signing Andros Townsend, telling Newcastle's official website the winger has an old fashioned style.

Townsend clinched a £12 million move from Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, and McClaren says he will be able to go straight into action despite not playing a first team game in the last three months.

He has been playing for Spurs' under-21 side instead, and McClaren says he has been able to tell from this that he is fully fit.

He said: "Andros is a winger with an old-fashioned style. He can play on the right or the left, is two-footed, quick, very direct and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball.

"Andros isn't fulfilling his potential at the moment and that's why we have brought him here. We see a lot more from Andros and are giving him a tremendous platform at St. James' Park to do that.

"He's been playing under-21 games, which I have watched, he is fit and will have a week's training with us, so there's no problems about him being ready. He will play straight away."

It could be argued that a couple of years ago Townsend was fulfilling his potential, even in the eyes of some, over-achieving, by starring for England.

He missed the World Cup through injury and is at risk of missing Euro 2016, but now as McClaren points out, he now has a platform to claim a squad place.

This season he played only three Premier League games, each as a substitute, and made three starts in the Europa League and Capital One Cup.
