The 21-year-old was impressive in pre-season for the Millers, but after Redfearn took over from Steve Evans mid-season, he struggled to win the ex-Leeds boss over.
Speaking after a 2-0 defeat to Huddersfield Town in December, Redfearn criticised Ward, questioning his contribution.
He told BBC Radio Sheffield: "Grant Ward to be fair has played well in previous games, but tonight he looked lost.
"He looked like a little lad. Too many situations happened when we don't have enough men out there to grab hold of the situation."
Fast forward to the end of January and Redfearn is more than happy with the central midfielder.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of an important Championship clash against Charlton Athletic, Redfearn praised Ward.
NR: "Grant Ward has really found his feet and was outstanding last week. He has really bought into everything that's been going on."— Rotherham United (@OfficialRUFC) January 28, 2016
Ward is gaining invaluable experience and ups and downs are to be expected, fortunately it appears he is back on the right track.
He has made 20 Championship starts this season, scoring twice, and may surprise a few people upon his scheduled return to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the campaign.
