Report: Newcastle eye up Jordan Rhodes; Steve McClaren is long-term admirer

Jordan Rhodes of Blackburn Rovers

Newcastle are considering Jordan Rhodes of Blackburn Rovers.

Steve McClaren is a big fan of Jordan Rhodes, the Chronicle reports.

It is claimed that Newcastle United are still planning on bringing a new forward to St James’ Park before the end of this month, and the head coach has drawn up a four-man shortlist of targets.

Saido Berahino, Loic Remy and Bafetimbi Gomis are on that shortlist, but have all been linked with the Magpies for much of the window.

However, Rhodes is also a target of McClaren, who has admired the Scottish striker since facing him in the Championship when in charge of Derby County.

It is stated that Blackburn have no desire to sell the 25-year-old, but they might consider accepting a huge offer if the Magpies submit one later this month.

However, Rhodes is still only a back-up option for Newcastle, but they are no closer to signing any of their priority targets, and out of desperation may make an over-the-odds approach for Rhodes.

Rhodes has established himself as one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Football League over recent years. The 13-capped international has scored 84 goals in 169 games for Blackburn, having signed from Huddersfield in 2012 - where he enjoyed an extremely similar run of goalscoring form.
