Newcastle United have been linked with a surprise move for centre-back Sol Bamba, by The Daily Star.
Bamba is the Leeds United club captain, but has been out of the side in recent weeks due to injury, and the form of Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci.
Even so, for Leeds, selling him for the £2 million price tag noted in the report makes little sense at this late stage of the transfer window, as they would have just Scott Wootton left as cover in the centre.
Newcastle are battling against relegation from the Premier League, and are in negotiations with Wolves to sell defender Mike Williamson, with SkySports reporting a fee has been agreed.
Former PSG trainee Bamba would be a cheap replacement, but has not played in the Premier League, despite experience of English football also with Leicester City. The Daily Star also cite interest from rivals Sunderland, although they have just added Lorient centre-back Lamine Kone.
Newcastle boss Steve McClaren did not come up against Bamba with Derby County last season, with the defender signing from Palermo only after Leeds had played the Rams twice.
Fans of the Toon are not so convinced that Bamba is the answer, voicing concerns over his age, and lack of recent game time at Leeds.
Here is a look at what they had to say via Twitter...
