Everton were defeated 3-1 by Manchester City on Wednesday evening, being knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage.
The result came despite the Toffees holding the advantage, having won the first leg at Goodison Park by a 2-1 scoreline.
Ross Barkley gave Roberto Martinez’s men the lead with a lovely long-range striker, before Fernandinho equalised just minutes later with a deflected shot.
Kevin de Buryne and Sergio Aguero clinched the victory in the second half, although the former’s goal was in fortuitous circumstances given the ball had crossed the byline in the build up.
However, City deserved their result as they dominated the majority of the game, and Everton never truly threatened to scored after going 2-1 down.
Martinez’s men looked out of sorts, with John Stones struggling at right-back, Gerard Deulofeu causing trouble and then wasting the ball on the wing, and Romelu Lukaku failing to perform in his usual powerful manner.
One player who performed well was goalkeeper Joel Robles, who kept his team in the game at times when they were being comprehensively outplayed.
After the game, the second choice stopper - who many believe should be first-choice - took to his personal Twitter account to react to the defeat.
