According to a report in the London Evening Standard, Harry Redknapp passed up the opportunity to sign Alexandre Pato at Queens Park Rangers.
Redknapp was in charge at QPR between 2012 and 2015, and he claims that the Brazilian international was offered to him during that time.
However, Redknapp rejected his chance to sign the former AC Milan striker, and he feels that Chelsea are making a mistake by moving for him.
“I was offered Pato at QPR this time last year but we turned him down because he wasn’t what we needed at the time,” Redknapp revealed. “He played against my Tottenham team when we faced AC Milan in the Champions League but seems to have faded away and ended up back in Brazil. He’s a little bit like Bojan at Stoke.
“Signing him looks like Chelsea just getting another body in, really. He’s got the ability to play anywhere but he’s not in the same class as Hazard. Okay, if they get injuries, then it is different but who drops out to accommodate him if everyone is available?”
Pato’s move to Chelsea is expected to go through in the next few days, with Guus Hiddink’s side looking to bolster their forward options.
The 26-year-old is set to provide competition for Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge.
Pato’s career so far has been a story of what might have been.
As a youngster he was considered one of the most exciting talents in world football, but a series of injuries has halted his progress.
Pato’s career has now faltered, but a move to Chelsea gives him an opportunity to prove his class in one of the world’s top leagues again.
