Everton were defeated by Manchester City in the League Cup.

Everton have been knocked out of the League Cup at the semi-final stage by Manchester City.

The Merseyside club travelled to the Etihad with a narrow advantage, leading 2-1 from the first-leg.

They went ahead through a fantastic Ross Barkley strike, but the Toffees were pegged back six minutes later when Fernandinho’s long-range shot deflected in.

Heading into the second half, City made their dominance count, with Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero clinching the victory, and securing passage to the Final against Liverpool by a 4-3 scoreline on aggregate.

De Bruyne’s goal was fortuitous, as the ball had crossed the byline in the build up to his strike, but City were well worth their victory.

Everton once again looked shaky as a defensive side, and Roberto Martinez made a strange decision to name talented centre-back John Stones at right-back.

After some recent criticism, Stones struggled all game, and he was withdrawn after 78 minutes for the more natural full-back Seamus Coleman.

Stones never looked settled in his new role, and fans took to Twitter after the game to react to the defender’s performance, with some suggesting he needs to spend some time on the sidelines to recover his form.
