Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy spoke highly of Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (January 25).
“I actually think Monreal has been so improved,” said Murphy. “He was a bit shaken when he first got into the team, but he has been arguably one of the best defenders for Arsenal this season.”
Monreal has been on the books of Arsenal since 2013 and has a contract until June 2019. The Spain international left-back has been one of the best players for the Gunners so far this season.
The 29-year-old has created 21 chances in 23 Premier League appearances for the North London outfit. Monreal has a pass accuracy of 84% and a shot accuracy of 50%, and has won 43 headers, 13 dribbles and 38 tackles.
England international Kieran Gibbs would normally be Arsenal’s first-choice left-back, but the 26-year-old’s injury has allowed Monreal to blossom this campaign.
Arsenal are third in the Premier League table at the moment with 44 points from 23 matches, three points behind leaders Leicester City.
Arsene Wenger’s side will take on Championship side Burnley at the Emirates Stadium in North London in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon.
