Newcastle have confirmed the signing of Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.
Townsend was confirmed as a Newcastle player yesterday evening, leaving boyhood club Spurs having fallen out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino.
The English international winger was signed for an undisclosed fee, agreeing a five-and-a-half year contract with the Magpies. He will wear the number 25 shirt, and will be looking to make his debut for the club next week, when Newcastle take on Everton in the Premier League.
Having been at Spurs since the age of eight, this is Townsend’s first permanent spell away from White Hart Lane, and, on paper, he is a strong signing for the Tyneside club.
He is fast and has a natural attacking instinct, and will bring some real width to Steve McClaren’s team.
The 24-year-old also has an eye for goal, although he has become renowned for his misfiring shots, rather than them hitting the back of the net over recent years.
If McClaren can coach some consistency into Townsend, Newcastle have a potentially fantastic player on their hands.
