Aston Villa fans react on Twitter to Philippe Senderos' departure

The 30-year-old Swiss centre-back left Villa by mutual consent on Wednesday evening after failing to feature for the club since November 2014.

After a largely forgettable 19-month spell, Philippe Senderos is an Aston Villa player no more.

The 30-year-old defender’s contract was terminated by mutual consent on Wednesday evening after making just nine total appearances for the club since joining on a free transfer from Valencia in June 2014.

Despite the initial scepticism surrounding his signing, the Swiss centre-back made a solid start to his claret and blue career, as he proved instrumental in helping the club secure 10 points from their first four Premier League games, conceding just one goal in the process.

However, he subsequently suffered a thigh injury while on international duty in October 2014 and spent the next four weeks on the sidelines as both Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker passed him in the pecking order.

He returned the following month as a late substitute in a 0-0 draw at West Ham United but later picked up a calf problem while training with Switzerland and failed to make another senior appearance over the rest of the campaign.

The former Arsenal man had not featured this term either after being left out of the club’s 25-man Premier League squad, and having had just six months left to run on his deal, his departure comes as little surprise.

He was certainly not the worst player to ever wear a Villa shirt, but judging by the reaction on Twitter to his departure, the claret and blue faithful are not too disappointed to see him gone.
