Sunderland's Duncan Watmore scores hat-trick in 6-0 friendly win against Newcastle

Sunderland overcame Newcastle United in fine style in a not-so-secret encounter this week.

When it comes to the Tyne-Wear derby there is no such thing as a friendly, so when Sunderland took on Newcastle United in a behind-closed-doors match on Wednesday afternoon, both sides would have wanted to leave the field as victors.

But few would have expected the Black Cats to win quite so emphatically, with Duncan Watmore scoring a hat-trick in a 6-0 victory for Sam Allardyce’s side.

It may not have had any impact on the season as a whole, but it is still great news for Sunderland fans and an embarrassment for those Newcastle players involved, including Steven Taylor, Yoan Gouffran and Karl Darlow.

Sunderland’s other goals came courtesy of Steven Fletcher, who netted a brace, and Jack Rodwell, and it will be a timely boost for those three in particular as they bid to have a significant impact for the first-team between now and the end of the season.

Watmore has scored three goals for Sunderland’s first-team this season but his hat-trick could see him in peak condition as his side looks to climb out of the relegation zone in the weeks ahead.
