Sunderland have finally signed Lamine Kone, the club confirmed last night on their official website.
His signing is part of a concerted effort by manager Sam Allardyce to improve the club's defence - which has shipped a league high 46 goals this season.
Kone is a centre-back who joins from French side Lorient, and is a player Allardyce has been determined to land.
The Mail reported last summer that Allardyce had made enquiries about Kone while still West Ham boss prior to his sacking, and began negotiations to sign him for Sunderland in December.
The deal took more than a month to get through, with a couple of set backs, but it says a lot about how highly Allardyce rates Kone that he persisted, and was ultimately able to get his man.
Sunderland are currently in 19th place but just four points away from safety, and have less than a week to make further signings before the transfer deadline.
Here is a look at how Sunderland fans reacted on Twitter to the deal finally being completed...
Always rated kone. Followed his career for years . Once described as the African terry butcher by sports journalists in the know. #safc— ctellio (@ctellio) January 27, 2016
I thought Alfred was a tank but Kone looks even bigger! Here's hoping he can do the business. #safc— Marky Mac (@mdotmac) January 27, 2016
