The Reds headed into the second leg of their semi final with Stoke City on Tuesday evening with a slender 1-0 lead after Jordon Ibe’s goal at the Britannia.
They were pegged back at the end of the first half though, as a goal from Marko Arnautovic levelled the scoreline with a contentious goal give his side on the evening.
However, they could not get the winner in the remainder of the game and it eventually went to penalties, with Liverpool managing to go through as 6-5 winners in the end.
And Gerrard was quick to congratulate his former side on Instagram following their progression to the final.
The Reds will now eagerly turn their attention to the second semi final on Wednesday evening, with Manchester City hosting Everton at the Etihad.
Roberto Martinez’s side currently hold a tentative one goal advantage from that game, meaning it is all still to play for, as the game at Anfield was.
And while they would not be keen to see their fierce rivals winning, there is no denying Liverpool and their fans will be relishing the chance of an all Merseyside final in four weeks time.
