Report: Liverpool make bid for Schalke's Joel Matip that would see defender move to Anfield this month

Giant Anfield Flag

The Cameroon international was apparently set to move to Merseyside in the summer, but Jurgen Klopp wants the defender now, reports claim.

Liverpool have made a bid that, if successful, would see Schalke defender Joel Matip move to Anfield during this window, according to The Sun.

The Sun reports that the Reds hoped to sign the 24-year-old when his contract expires in the summer, but Jurgen Klopp now wants the Cameroon international to move to Merseyside during this window due to the injury problems that have plagued his centre-backs this season.

Kolo Toure, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Martin Skrtel have all spent time on the sidelines during this campaign, which has already led to Klopp brining in Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker on loan until the end of the season, and now it appears that he may not be the only addition brought in to bolster the club's defensive ranks.

The Sun reports that while the Bundesliga side are reluctant to let the 24-year-old leave, they would rather let him go during this window, than see him depart for nothing at the end of the season.

With injuries playing such a large part in Liverpool's season, it would not be a surprise if Klopp was looking for a defender that has few question marks regarding his fitness. And with Matip having featured in every single top flight game for Schalke this season, it is safe to say that those concerns would be largely alleviated.
