Spanish football pundit Guillem Balague has dismissed suggestions Manchester United are close to signing Real Madrid attacker James Rodriguez or Sevilla star Ever Banega.
The Sun have reported that United are also stepping up interest in 27-year-old Argentine star Banega.
Balague has dismissed the claims, telling SkySports he did not believe either deal was likely.
He said: "There is no chance of James going in January and Sevilla are saying they know nothing about Manchester United when it comes to Ever Banega."
United are currently fifth in the Premier League and are five points off fourth placed Tottenham Hotspur.
Despite their need to improve, they have not made a single mid-season signing, and it is unclear if they will, despite varying reports suggesting possible transfer targets.
Uncertainty continues surrounding the future of manager Louis van Gaal, and while this goes on, the club appear unwilling to back him further in the transfer market, while it will also be tougher to attract players.
