Former Aston Villa striker Stan Collymore suggested on the Call Collymore on talkSPORT on Saturday evening (January 23) that Southampton forward Shane Long is one of the best players to bring on as a substitute.
“I don’t think there are many better players in English football coming off the bench than Shane Long because when you are absolutely knackered as a centre-half, you bring him on and he gets behind you,” said Collymore.
Collymore made his comments about Long while analysing the current Southampton squad.
The 29-year-old forward has been on the books of the Saints since 2014 and has a contract until June 2018.
The Republic of Ireland international has scored five goals and created 15 chances in 15 Premier League appearances so far this season.
Long has a pass accuracy of 65% and a shot accuracy of 47%, and has won 46 headers, two dribbles and five tackles.
According to recent media reports, Long has been linked with a move away from Southampton in the January transfer window.
