Report: Newcastle to push through Florian Thauvin exit with Townsend deal close

Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Andros Townsend.

Newcastle are ready to sanction the departure of Florian Thauvin, Le10Sport reports.

The Magpies only signed Thauvin over the summer transfer window, but he has not adapted to English football in the way many expected.

He has managed just 16 games, starting only three times in the Premier League, and only once - v Northampton Town in the League Cup - did he live up to his reputation.

He looks far out of Steve McClaren’s plans, but the head coach has been unwilling to allow Thauvin to leave St James’ Park this month due to a lack of cover for the wing position.

However, the report indicates that Tottenham’s Andros Townsend is now close to signing for the Tyneside club, meaning that Thauvin can return to Marseille now.

Townsend is set to accept a move to Newcastle, with a fee agreed between Spurs and McClaren’s side, and this means that Thauvin will be leaving the club this week.

It is not known whether Thauvin’s move will be a permanent or a loan deal to Marseille, but he will be leaving the North East in the coming days.
