SkySports claim Shakhtar Donetsk are holding out for £35 million from Liverpool for Alex Teixeira.
The Reds have offered £25 million for the Brazilian forward, and the clubs remain apart on transfer fees.
Teixeira has scored 22 goals in 16 games for the Ukrainian side this season, and his form has attracted the interest of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.
Klopp signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Shakhtar for Borussia Dortmund two summers ago, beating Liverpool to the deal.
He will now be hoping that on this occasion Liverpool's directors approve the deal and can get it done.
Teixeira is a talent who could quickly repay his investment. The Reds are just three points behind fifth placed Manchester United, and his goals could help them mount a push to finish in the top four, and receive a huge financial windfall via Champions League qualification.
With few available strikers of real quality around mid-season, Liverpool should bite the bullet and pay up to get their man, and work out a way to sell unwanted players to recoup the £10 million difference, after they close the deal.
