Newcastle should make a loan move for West Brom's James Chester

Newcastle United should contact West Bromwich Albion regarding their Welsh centre-back.

Newcastle United have conducted some smart transfer business so far this month, securing the signings of Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet and agreeing a fee with Tottenham Hotspur for Andros Townsend.

However, the Magpies still need a new striker while a defensive reinforcement or two would not go amiss as Steve McClaren’s side bid to avoid relegation.

There are few quality players available midway through a campaign but there is a talented centre-back with plenty to offer in the form of West Bromwich Albion’s James Chester.

At 27, the Welsh international has plenty of experience, while he will also be hoping to secure a place in his country’s Euro 2016 squad; something that will be a struggle the longer he remains at The Hawthorns.

Despite Chester’s undeniable talent he has barely been used by Baggies boss Tony Pulis since arriving in a big-money move from Hull City, featuring just twice in the league and both times in his less natural position of right-back.

Chester is a centre-back and a good one at that, and if Newcastle are looking to strengthen in that area they could do a lot worse than bring him in on loan this month with a view to signing him permanently in the summer.

With plenty of top flight experience from his time at Hull, and having come through the ranks at Manchester United – where he was regarded as one of their best young defenders – Chester is a player McClaren should certainly make a late bid for.
