Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy predicted on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show on talkSPORT on Monday morning (January 25) that Newcastle United would get more points than Sunderland in the Premier League between now and the end of the season.
“From now till the end of the season, 15 games, which group of players will get the most points?” said Murphy. “I would probably edge towards Newcastle.”
Both Newcastle and Sunderland are in the bottom three at the moment, and are in real danger of going down to the Championship at the end of the season.
The Black Cats are currently second from bottom in the Premier League table with 19 points from 23 matches. Steve McClaren’s side are two points above Sunderland and two behind 17th-placed Norwich City.
It is clear that both the Magpies and the Black Cats will have some tough times in the coming months.
However, Newcastle are more likely to get more points than Sunderland between now and the end of the season because they have better players.
Georginio Wijnaldum, Moussa Sissoko and Aleksandar Mitrovic are all good players, and the Newcastle fans should be optimistic of retaining their Premier League status for next season.
