Could Vertonghen's injury see Fazio stay at Tottenham until the summer?

Tottenham Hotspur have lost one of their top defenders for a spell due to injury.

Tottenham Hotspur fans woke up to the news they were fearing this morning as the club confirmed key defender Jan Vertonghen suffered medial collateral ligament damage in his knee during the recent match against Crystal Palace.

Vertonghen left Selhurst Park on crutches so there was always a chance he would be ruled out for a while, and now – although no time-frame has been put on his recovery – it seems the Belgian international will not be back any time soon.

That means Kevin Wimmer is likely to deputise after the Austrian came off the bench for his Premier League debut on Saturday, but could Vertonghen’s injury also see a change in situation for another Tottenham defender?

Federico Fazio looked set for the White Hart Lane exit this month after he fell down the pecking order, making just one first-team appearance to date and only being named on the bench twice in the league to date.

However, with Wimmer now likely to play alongside Toby Alderweireld, and Eric Dier featuring prominently in the centre of the park, manager Mauricio Pochettino will need defensive cover on the bench.

Strength in depth will be vital for Spurs as they bid to maintain their charge in three competitions, so those fans preparing for Fazio’s departure may see a change in the weeks ahead.
