Andros Townsend comments on Newcastle United move, hints at position change

The Tottenham star is expected to undergo his medical tomorrow.

Newcastle United are set to complete the signing of Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend this week after finally agreeing a fee with the London club for the England international's signature.

Townsend will cost Newcastle a fee in the region of £12 million, according to the BBC, after falling out of favour at White Hart Lane in recent months. It came after a public disagreement with the Tottenham fitness coach and he has been playing with the under-21s more often than not ever since.

Now Sky Sports is reporting quotes from the player about the move, in which he suggests where he will be playing his football at Newcastle should the move, as expected, be concluded.

He is quoted as saying:

"As soon as I knew of Newcastle's interest they were the only club I wanted to join.

"Two of the biggest positions you can play in football are centre-forward or left-winger. I've got the chance to play one of those - I could never turn that down. I can't wait to play my first game at St James' Park, I'm excited!"

The same report also suggests that he will undergo his medical at Newcastle tomorrow.

The interesting remark is certainly regarding his potential position at Newcastle.

He has received a lot of criticism in his career for his play from the right-wing - as he often comes in on to his left-foot and shoots rather than develop the play.

It would appear that Newcastle and Steve McClaren have different plans for using Townsend that may see even see him playing through the middle.

Exciting times for Newcastle fans as they continue their fight against relegation.
