Why an Aston Villa loan move for Mathieu Debuchy is a no-brainer

Aston Villa are said to be closing in on the Arsenal defender.

According to a recent report from French newspaper L’Equipe Aston Villa are closing in on a loan deal for Arsenal right-back Mathieu Debuchy, and if the reports are true it could prove to be a wonderful piece of business.

Debuchy has seen his playing-time at the Gunners severely limited due to the form of Hector Bellerin, but despite a shaky showing against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the campaign the French international’s mooted move to Villa makes sense for all concerned.

At his best Debuchy is one of the finest right-backs in the country, a player who shone at Newcastle United before switching the Emirates Stadium.

Injuries have played their part in limiting his chances but he is now fully fit and, most importantly, fighting for a place in France’s Euro 2016 squad this summer.

It is that motivation that ensures a loan deal for Debuchy is a no-brainer because he will want to hit the ground running and prove emphatically that he is ready to compete at the highest level once more.

At 30 he has the experience to excel at Villa Park, while a loan move means there is no long-term risk if injuries strike once again.

Villa need new faces and it is not often that an international defender with plenty of Premier League experience comes along midway through a campaign.

Factor in manager Remi Garde’s knowledge of French football and this is one January transfer that looks set to pay rich dividends.
