A potential injury blow for one Tottenham Hotspur defender could give a long-awaited chance to another.
According to a recent report from the London Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen fears he has damaged medial ligaments and could be set for a lengthy spell on the side-lines.
The Belgian international has been an ever-present in the Premier League this season but he left the field against Crystal Palace with 15 minutes remaining and was later seen on crutches ahead of the trip back to White Hart Lane.
Vertonghen has formed a wonderful partnership with countryman Toby Alderweireld at Tottenham this season, but if the former’s fears are realised it could well be up to Kevin Wimmer to show what he can do on a consistent basis.
The Austria international signed from Cologne in the summer; however he has had to wait patiently for his chances, finally making his league debut as Vertonghen’s replacement on Saturday.
After impressive showings in the Europa League, Capital One Cup and FA Cup, Wimmer certainly has the talent to play well alongside Alderweireld, and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be eager to find out the extent of Vertonghen’s injury so he can plan for the upcoming matches against Colchester United in the FA Cup and Norwich City and Watford in the league.
