According to a report in the Daily Mail, Middlesbrough are holding up Birmingham City’s move for Diego Fabbrini.
The Blues are close to signing Fabbrini for £1 million from Watford, but they have been unable to get a deal over the line so far.
Although the attacking midfielder is reportedly willing to move to St. Andrew's, and Watford are satisfied with the offer made for the 27-year-old, Middlesbrough do not want to sanction a deal yet.
Fabbrini is due to stay with Boro until the end of the season on loan, but the North East club are refusing to allow him to return to Watford until they have a replacement.
Fabbrini has featured very rarely for Boro recently, but Aitor Karanka does not want to take any chances with his squad.
Middlesbrough are linked with Southampton’s Gaston Ramirez by TalkSPORT, and it may be that Fabbrini is not allowed to leave until the Uruguayan agrees to switch to the Riverside.
If Fabbrini does move to Birmingham, he will become their third addition of the January transfer window following the arrivals of William Buckley and James Vaughan.
