Daryl Janmaat was outstanding for Newcastle United against Watford

Daryl Janmaat has been one of Newcastle United's most important players this season.

Daryl Janmaat was once again superb, despite Newcastle United’s 2-1 loss to Watford on Saturday.

The Magpies have had a hugely disappointing season so far and they are fighting for their Premier League lives with games running out.

Many of Newcastle’s players have underperformed, but Janmaat is able to reflect on his personal season with pride.

The Dutch defender has been Newcastle’s most consistent performer throughout the campaign and he was a danger against Watford throughout.

Janmaat put in eight crosses in the fixture, more than any other player with the exception of Jonjo Shelvey, and he also went on five dribbles.

The right-back was generally reliable in possession - making 65 passes in total, and finding a teammate with over 70% of them.

But it was arguably Janmaat’s willingness to continue showing for the ball which was the most impressive.

Janmaat touched the ball 93 times, which is the fourth highest figure posted by any Newcastle player this season.

It means that Janmaat now has five of the top nine figures for the most touches in a Newcastle match throughout the campaign to date.

For a right-back to be posting such high figures is hugely impressively, and although many of Newcastle’s players deserve the criticism that is being direct towards them, Janmaat could be doing little more to help his side.
